Meet Our Team

Dr. Amy Maskey, MS, DVM

Dr. Amy Maskey hails from New Baltimore, Michigan.

She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Northern Michigan University. She then went on the get her Master of Science degree in Aquatic Ecology from the same institution. She obtained her veterinary degree from Michigan State University. After graduation she completed an avian and exotic medicine and surgery internship at Broward Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital in Florida.

She has worked predominantly on exotic animals (birds, reptiles, small exotic mammals, fish, and even spiders) since 2015. As she joins Avian Health Services she brings her expertise in other exotics, as well as birds and reptiles, to the Diamond Springs office.

Dr. Jeanne Smith, DVM

Dr. Jeanne Smith has operated an all avian and reptile veterinary practice since 1988.

Dr. Smith started her training by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Avian Sciences at the University of California, Davis. Then she went on to receive her veterinary degree from UC Davis. After veterinary school, she completed an avian medicine internship at North Carolina State University and a one-year avian medicine residency at UC Davis.

Before starting her private practice in 1988, she was the director of a laboratory manufacturing poultry vaccines for one year. Also in 1988 she became the consulting veterinarian for Roudybush, Inc., a position she held for 19 years. In 2007 Dr. Smith began seeing reptiles in her practice. A lifelong reptile owner herself, she began attending reptile medicine and surgery seminars to meet the growing need for veterinary care for reptiles.

Dr. Smith conducted research in her spare time in the 2000's to develop species specific probiotics for birds.  As a result of this research, true probiotics are now available for cockatiels, budgies, and the pyrhurra species conures (green cheeked conures and their close relatives).

As a published author, she has written various articles for a variety of bird magazines and has frequently given lectures to animal science classes at UC Davis and to local bird clubs.
